Aquidneck Island visitors from the west will instantly recognize this quintessential Newport landmark, the Clairborne Pell Bridge— known to locals as simply “the Pell.” Built in 1969, the Pell was rumored to have been scaled high enough for Naval carriers to pass under, only to be completed and wind up not tall enough for newer Navy specs. Regardless, the views of this bridge are simply beautiful, providing perfect watercolor inspiration.
